What Has Been Happening and What is Coming This 2022!

Dusi Canoe Marathon

Dusi 2022! This year was the 71st edition of the annual MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon and it was a cracker of a race. The Dusi Canoe Marathon was founded in 1951 and covers roughly 120km between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban. It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world’s most popular river marathons, attracting between 900 and 1600 paddlers each year. The race starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban’s Blue Lagoon after three days of tough canoeing with this year being a particular challenge with all the rain we have had.

This year’s winners were none other than Andy Birkett and Dave Evans and Abby Solms and Bianca Haw. Massive congratulations to both teams!

Northwood Autumn Market

It’s almost time to start getting ready for Autumn! Luckily, Durban West likes to keep us warmer in winter than other spots, lucky us! The Northwood Family Market is taking place on March 13th and will be a fun family day out! There will be live music from Northwood musicians, great food and loads of stalls offering something for everyone. Entry is R20 per person with children U12 free.

St Patrick’s Day

This takes place on March 19th and is definitely one for the books! Our favourite Irish Pub in Westville, Waxy O’Connors gets extra festive for this day and goes as far as to serve green beer. We highly recommend booking a table if you would like to go to Waxy O’Connors or any other pub for this fun day.

Azania

Music meets storytelling in the production of the play, Azania at the Stable Theatre in Greyville!

Bantu Africa takes us on a journey of hopes and disappointments as he searches for his daughter that disappeared during apartheid – leading to democracy. This is on a number of people’s ‘must watch’ list and we are very much looking forward to watching on May 24th.

The Royal Agricultural Show

Just down the hill from Durban West, the wonderful Royal Agricultural Show takes place in Pietermaritzburg from May 27th to June 5th. The Royal Agricultural Show is the continent’s largest mixed exhibition incorporating a fully-fledged agricultural component – this annual ten-day event is well-known for including showings of livestock and agricultural equipment, as well as competitive horse riding and a wide range of other displays and activities. There are lifestyle exhibitions, music concerts and even a funfair. It is great for the entire family and fun for all involved.

Comrades Marathon!

The annual Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 89 kilometres (55 miles) which is run in our beautiful KwaZulu-Natal province! Similar to the Dusi, the race runs between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg and is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race. This year’s Comrades Marathon is scheduled to be a Down Run and will take place on Sunday 28 August 2022. This is an awesome race to support from the sidelines and brings the KZN community altogether!

We hope that this list gives you some exciting events to look forward to for this 2022. Keep your eyes on our Instagram and Facebook pages to stay up to date with what’s happening in Durban West and surrounds!
